The Shape Of Things To Come
(Dateline: A little Internet Cafe in Montreal) I wasn't going to blog for a few days, but several things have caught my attention, and when I chanced upon MRJ Media Cafe Internet, I couldn't resist!
Tuesday morning I went out for breakfast in Ticonderoga and picked up the local papers. I found a very moving opinion column by Leonard Pitts, Jr. about the ongoing genocide in Sudan's Darfur region. Especially moving for me because I was recently reminded of the plight of slaves and former slave Francis Bok, who I mentioned in a recent post about missing Alabama Teen Natalee Holloway. That got me thinking of all of the trials and tribulations AFRICA and her people have been going through. Slavery, Aids, Ebola, Genocide. Enough that would bring any western nation not to its knees, but flat on its face. Yet AFRICA presses on. Mr. Pitts writes:"The death toll in Sudan stands at 400,000 and rising. The United States has provided humanitarian aid, but has declined forcefully to press Sudan - a putative ally in the war on terror - to stop the massacre..."
"...One of the dirty little secrets of scribbling opinions in newspapers for a living is that, on moral issues, you get to feel like you've done your part when all you've really done is your job.
Not that there isn't value in a columnist trying to rouse and shape public opinion. But it can be an easy out. And those who lack that out are always left asking the same question: "What can I do?"
By the same token, though, I think people overdo the "I'm just one person, I'm helpless" routine. Especially in light of two facts: (1) We are fortunate enough to live under a representative government that, in theory and often enough in practice, responds to our concerns and, (2) the Internet gives us more information and personal power than our forebears could have dreamed.
Truth is, we are the least helpless people on Earth. So "I'm just one" simply doesn't cut it..." (Entire Article)
Earlier this month, newspapers published Mr. Pitts' "End silence on Sudan slaughter" (HERE).
MM hits another outta the park...
NOT Mickey Mantle! Michelle Malkin! The post is entitled LAND OF THE MEEK:My new column is up, taking off from this blog post yesterday on the insipid "Operation Respect: Don't Laugh at Me" curriculum being introduced into the NYC public schools. INTRO:
White House senior adviser Karl Rove caused a firestorm last week after observing that liberals favor "therapy and understanding" to fight terrorism in a post-Sept. 11 world.
Rove spoke the truth. But he barely scratched the surface.
The left-wing Kumbaya crowd is quietly grooming a generation of pushovers in the public schools... read the EnTiRe PoSt
The material gathered by Mr. Pitts and Ms. Malkin should shake up a few of you sleepy-heads. If you ever wanted to take a stand for something, for freedom, for justice, for your fellow-man and for the sake of the USA, NOW IS THE TIME!

Hi Dave,
Thanks for posting on Pitts's Darfur article. I get the feeling lots of bloggers and writers sympathize with the 'you get to feel like you've done your part when all you've really done is your job'...especially when the blogging and ranting bit may not even be your real job.
Well, take it from an aid worker in Darfur - that's doing your part. Now if only the rest of the media and online community would feel the same...
Keep it up!
