Bush, Harriet Miers & Bird Flu
President Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court is a divisive issue among conservative thinkers, analysts and bloggers. Michelle Malkin hits yet another one out of the park with her coverage in MIERS & THE MORNING AFTER. Some say this represents a missed opportunity for the president to select a solid conservative. Others, like Ambra Nykola, believe Bush is right on target: "...I don't believe President Bush's success in office should be determined by what he has and hasn't done to further the "conservative agenda." His success should be determined by his obedience to what he knows to be right because like everyone else, President Bush will also give an account for his life, his decisions, and his stewardship of the responsibility of the presidency..." Now, this is scarey stuff --- "President Bush has announced that if the Avian Flu does become a pandemic and move to the United States he might use the United States military to quarantine parts of the country."
Blogger JC Refuge applauds Bush's coming out with this information and offers transcript excerpts (HERE). Cranky George seems to agree (HERE), while Austin Bay Blog has been blogging (and thinking) ahead of the curve (HERE).
I would question the wisdom of a quarantine. How would it be enforced, and exactly by whom, and how would law and order be dealt with. What about supplies and jobs, etc.? If the quarantine are were large enough, wouldn't people still have to maintain their daily lives (jobs, school, etc.?) If a loved one was outside the quarantine area would he or she be allowed to go in to go home or be with family? It is best we address these issues now.
