Strange Days Have Found Us

Pictured: the late Paul Berkley. CLICK on the photograph to go to his blog.

Scenario: Police say Monique Berkley asked two teens (she was sleeping with one of them) to kill her husband, Paul, just home from Iraq. She and her late husband both had blogs. So did their two kids. The local paper, the News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C. quoted from (and linked to) all of them in its coverage.

"With so much written about blogging in the past year, it's amazing that just now we are witnessing the kind of high-profile crime case that raises new and, some say, troubling issues about how reporters and editors should regard the very personal, yet very public, information shared on Web logs..."

Read complete article.

Beware where you point, click and post your most personal details. information on blogs can be used in court, like letters and phone calls, especially since it's easy to prove on whose computer the blogs were created.

Andrew Canty and Latwon Johnson, both 18, are charged in the murder.

Canty and Johnson were having relationships with Monique Berkley, as well as Paul Berkley's daughter, according to a family friend's blog. The blog includes a picture of all four together. "It's all just so ironic, isn't it?" Becky Berkley wrote Tuesday on her own blog, MistressBecky, as her stepmother was making her first court appearance. "My dad was in the Middle East for months and months and didn't get shot... then he came home, where you'd assume he'd be much safer... and then, all this happened."

I don't think this is the typical American family: Paul was known to keep a komodo dragon in his house. Monique had once been involved with a woman who has since had a sex-change operation and become a man. Their son is a punk rocker who tops his MySpace blog with, "I kill for sex."

Blogs as Evidence? - Investigators turn to blogs in Berkley murderMonique Berkley is charged with murdering her Navy reservist husband. Andrew Canty and Latwon Johnson, both black, also are charged in the murder. Canty and Johnson were having relationships with Monique Berkley, as well as Paul Berkley's daughter Becky, according to a family friend's blog. The blog includes a picture of all four together. - (NNN Newsroom)

CD Sales and American Top 40

It's funny to watch all the music critics and "experts" try to explain trends in sales of music CDs here in the United States. The explanation is SO simple!

Aging rockers can’t get no satisfaction
Many listeners prefer live concerts over older musicians’ new CDs
By ETHAN SMITH (The Wall Street Journal)

Neil Diamond was about to release his first new studio album in four years.
But at a concert by the singer recently in Los Angeles, longtime fan Jim Arnold said he had no plans to buy the CD. Furthermore, Arnold said he hoped that Diamond wouldn’t be playing anything from it.

“The Stones, Rod Stewart, Neil — they all want to introduce new stuff,” said Arnold, a 65-year-old real estate broker. “And all the people want to hear is the old stuff.”
In time for holiday gift-giving, music labels are betting that Arnold is wrong. They are releasing a raft of titles from artists who haven’t offered new music in years

ARNOLD IS WRONG! He is 65 years old... go younger... 55 and below... those fans DON'T share Arnold's views...

“There’s a disconnect between artists that are selling records and artists that are selling massive amounts of tickets,” said Randy Phillips, president of AEG Live, one of the country’s three largest concert promoters.
That is why the recording industry is using novel concepts to promote the new discs. V irgin, the label behind the Stones’ Grammy-nominated “A Bigger Bang,” cut a deal to get the music played on an NBC soap opera. To reach younger listeners, Diamond’s label, Columbia Records, promoted “12 Songs” on MySpace.com, a social networking Web site that more typically serves as a launching pad for teen and college favorites, such as the band Weezer.

Sales reports can be deceiving. Several friends of mine ranging in age from 19 all the way up to 42 HAVE A COPY of the Stones' "Bigger Bang." Key phrase here: "Have a copy."
8 people I know downloaded the CD from bittorrent-type mp3 sites. 6 others copied a friends copy on their PC. 4 others (including myself) copied the CD from a copy borrowed from the Albany Public Library. NOT ONE US purchased the CD.

On the other hand, MARIAH CAREY, who has made a spectacular career comeback, has the top CD of 2005. Coincidentally, ALL of the same people I know (except for one) who copied the Stones CD also own Mariah's MIMI CD, and all of them (except for another one) have ORIGINAL STORE-BOUGHT COPIES (I'm the only one who copied MIMI from a friend's copy).

I think this is what is happening across the board. Mariah's CD has been more tightly controlled and quality copies have been kept out of the reach of "casual downloaders."
You're seeing this trend out in CD sales nationally: to look at the charts you would think the only music Americans listen to is RAP. This is not so. What IS so, is that the majority of people who listen to RAP don't have the computer equipment and/or the hi-speed internet service needed to download and copy RAP.

Combine that aspect with a tightly-controlled product, and you have the stellar results MIMI has reaped for Mariah Carey. Had the CD been easily downloaded and copied, sales would likely have been cut by 40 per cent. Mariah has a large R&B and RAP following, and again for the most part, these fans don't have the equipment to grab the downloads. I do expect this to change in a few years. While 1999 was the turning point year for CDs and the music industry, I believe a SECOND turning point is not very far off... perhaps 2007 or 2008.

1999: The critical event was the making of a star, Christina Aguilera, by use of the Internet. Soon, the downloading of pirated music CDs (and a bit later on, Movies) chnaged the face of so-called "Top 40" music and the radio FOREVER:When executives at RCA Records were plotting ways to create buzz around teen pop singer Christina Aguilera's debut album, they knew the Internet would play a crucial role.

The trick was marketing Ms. Aguilera without making teens feel they were actually being marketed to. On a 1-10 scale, Internet marketer Ken Krasner says, teens "have their B.S. detectors on 11."

RCA hired a team of young cybersurfers to swarm the Web and start chatting about the 18-year-old Ms. Aguilera on popular teen Internet sites such as www.alloy.com, www.bolt.com and www.gurl.com. They postedinformation casually -- sometimes sounding like fans, sometimes like official spokesmen -- but always making sure not to come off as lame adults trying to be cool or marketers pitching a product. It worked. Thanks in large part to the advance buzz online, the album "Christina Aguilera" was No. 1 on the charts when it debuted in late August. (Source)Doesn't sound like much of a big deal, does it? But that's the day "Top 40" died. Today's so-called "Top 40" does not accurately reflect what music the general public is listening to.

State of the World's Children 2006

The State of the World's Children 2006: Excluded and Invisible is a sweeping assessment of the world's most vulnerable children, whose rights to a safe and healthy childhood are exceptionally difficult to protect.
The report describes in detail how these children - poor, exploited and abused - are being ignored, growing up beyond the reach of development campaigns and often invisible in everything from public debate and legislation to statistics and news stories.

Stars Duke It Out In Singapore

(from The Electric New Paper, December 26, 2005 )

OH dear!
Poor Zoe Tay.
Her antics at the recent Star Awards earned her not just brickbats but also our Turn-off Of The Year award.

She had outstayed her welcome on stage when she hogged the limelight three times - interrupting Best Actor winner Chen Hanwei's thank-you speech to hug him.
She also caused Fann Wong to make a speedy exit when she insisted that Christopher Lee propose to Fann. She also fought guest presenter Christy Chung for the mike.

It was quite a landslide win for the Caldecott Hill Queen, with 225 of our readers voting her Turn-Off. In comparison, the attention-starved Steven Lim came in a far second with 164 votes.

His confidence that blogger Wendy Cheng, aka Xiaxue, is more disliked than he is, is unfortunately misplaced.
Despite her reputation for shooting her mouth off, or rather, firing missiles all over the place with her keyboard, our readers were indifferent to Wendy+++.
Her fears of being 'mediocre' came true.
She came in at an average placing with 81 votes, with DJ and Eye For A Guy 2 contestant Shan Wee bringing up the rear with 43 votes.

We tried to get Zoe's reaction to her win but her manager declined politely on her behalf. 'What's done has been done, just let it pass. Zoe has already explained herself, and like she said, let us move on.'

+++Wendy Cheng pulls no punches and takes no prisoners... read her December 28th post "Not letting life shortchange you."

All Quiet...

Guest Post by blogger mac in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia

I'm late. I was supposed to write this entry a week ago. I've been dithering over what to write. I say, the idea of guest posting is quite intimidating and alluring at the same time, considering some of the earlier posts here. I have formidable company that's for sure.

I've just come off one of the quietest Christmas periods I've had in recent memory.

Once, this would have been deemed a total disaster, a social failure on my part to indulge in the annual Christmas festivities which usually involve getting sloshed and having hangovers.

This year, the quiet is very welcome. It was wonderful.

I went visiting to some friends houses. That's what we do here in this country. During holidays like Christmas, we visit each other. I was talking about this and I understand that other people in other countries generally don't do this. It's a wonderful custom and everyone should try it.

It rained a lot over the weekend. On Christmas day itself, it rained the whole day. That made everything very dull and sombre.

Anyway, quiet. That basically describes 2005. I'll remember 2005 as the year where nothing happened to me. And I appreciate that. Nothing to get broken up over and nothing to regret. Once in a while, it's good to have a quiet year after all that's happened in the years before that.

Maybe this is what people mean when they talk about the "rest" of your life.

Next week, for new year's eve I will once again migrate to a jungle resort with some of my friends. We're going to have a quiet weekend.

And what of next year? I feel a slight trepidation mixed in with mild excitement and a dash of fear thrown in. It's not good for the stomach I'm telling you.

Of course that means I need to buy something alcoholic to calm myself down when I go away to my favourite jungle resort this weekend *winks*

Happy New Year and Merry Christmas wherever you are. May all our wishes come true.

Building A Murder Case

Bodybuilders Craig Titus and Kelly Ryan are being held in a Boston area jail without bail while they await their next court date. Titus, whose age has been given as 37, 39 or 40, reportedly admitted to secretly having an affair with 28-year-old Melissa James (a former fitness instructor and live-in personal aide to Titus and his wife) whose body was found in the trunk of a burned car. Titus and Ryan, 33, say they recently evicted James for embezzling from them, but that they had not filed a police complaint.

Depending on the source, Titus, who helped MÖTLEY CRÜE frontman Vince Neil lose 20 pounds as part of VH1's "Remaking: Vince Neil" special, and former USC Cheerleader Ryan are not or are fighting extradition back to Las Vegas. The two made their first court appearance Tuesday morning in Canton, Massachusetts. That's where police finally found them after they were charged in connection with the James murder.

"The trail started when the Mountain Springs firefighters put out the car before it was totally obliterated, and were able to get identifiers off the car, which led us to Kelly Ryan. And then just good old-fashioned police work developed sufficient evidence where we could charge Craig as well as Kelly with the murder," says one police official. :(More)::(Video):

Medicine: Who Decides? Not Paul Krugman!

NY Times OP-ED COLUMNIST Paul Krugman offers a piece in today's paper entitled "Medicine: Who Decides?" (It's a you-must-register thing if you want to read the article on-line):

"To get health reform right, we'll have to overcome wrongheaded ideas as well as powerful special interests. Employer-based health insurance is unraveling, Medicaid is under severe pressure, and vast Medicare costs loom on the horizon. Something must be done..." You got THAT right, Krugy!

Krugman has been using his space on the New York Times op-ed page for weeks now to discuss America's "real crisis"--not Social Security but health care. Krugman deplores the horrid state of American medicine, the large number of uninsured, and the high cost of it all. He claims that "the private sector is often bloated and bureaucratic" and finds solace in the supposed outperformance of other countries' "universal" systems. Sound familiar? If the Princeton economist turned pundit is any indicator, HillaryCare is back on the radar.

Is "Hillarycare" really such a bad thing? Consider this: many employers are now introducing the "Health Savings Account" as an alternative to the kind of medical insurance we're all used to. they're doing this slowly, as opposed to just ramming it down our throats. Oh, they still intend to ram it, but they'll do so slowly... the HSA is appealing to the devil-may-care single 20-something worker who thinks of himself or herself as invincible and never gets sick. As more 20-somethings join companies and take the HSA plan, they'll say "... see employees? We TOLD you this is a better idea... so many have signed up... we have no choice but to RAISE your premiums next year by 75%... " Of course, at that point, you will be financially forced to take on an HSA of your own. That's the plan, and that's where Hillary Clinton is counting her chickens... her Presidency is in the bag if this HSA thing really takes off large-scale nationwide.

Krugman continues: "For one thing, insurance will always cover the really big expenses. We're not going to have a system in which people pay for heart surgery out of their health savings accounts and save money by choosing cheaper procedures. And that's not an unfair example..."
REALLY??? People are already going outside the States for Heart Surgery because it is way cheaper and it is performed with higher precision and quality! Americans and others are going to exotic locales like India and Thailand for elective surgeries performed by world-class doctors at Third-World prices.

Krugman really looks down at the average Joe: "...it's neither fair nor realistic to expect ordinary citizens to have enough medical expertise to make life-or-death decisions about their own treatment."

Merry Christmas 2005!

Just what do you think you're doing on the internet on Christmas morning?!? Maybe you just got a new IBM ThinkPad or maybe you've risen early to make last minute preps for the holiday. Thanks for coming by this blog!

I've learned a LOT since I began this humble weBlog back in November 2004. (I actually started it a year earlier, but at the time, Xanga was such a crappy service, it was too hard to maintain.) The good folks at blogger/blogspot make it SO EASY, so you're always learning as you're going along: right now, I could go back to that old Xanga site and make it kick butt!

Here are some links you may enjoy. The first is for those of you familiar with the Albany Schenectady Troy TV market. It's a funny column by veteran TV newsguy JOHN GRAY. I used to try to get Mr. Gray to stop by and be a guest on the Capital Region People radio show, but we just nvere could settle on a convenient time. As I write this at 6:15am, WROW am590 is airing one of my programs where my guest is Dr. Larry Family.

I had a busy Saturday, a very busy Christmas Eve, and I am amazed I got so many things done in such a short timeframe! I actually got to bed early: around 12 Midnight! But as 4am rolled around, I found myself wide awake, twirling the radio dial back and forth between WCBS 880 where the network was giving those NORAD Santa updates and Coast-to-Coast (which I listen to via WTAM 1100 on my C Crane Radio) was talking about changelings, clones, transgenic humans and chimeras.

Executive Intelligence

Guest Post by blogger jin (Seattle)

In a report published Monday, the Lovenstein Institute of Scranton, Pennsylvania detailed its findings of a four month study of the intelligence quotient of President George W. Bush. Since 1973, the Lovenstein Institute has published its research to the education community on each new president, which includes the famous "IQ" report among others.

According to statements in the report, there have been twelve presidents over the past 50 years, from F.D. Roosevelt to G. W. Bush who were all rated based on scholarly achievements, writings that they alone produced without aid of staff, their ability to speak with clarity, and several other psychological factors which were then scored in the Swanson/Crain system of intelligence ranking.

The study determined the following IQs of each president as accurate to within five percentage points:

147 Franklin D. Roosevelt (D)
132 Harry Truman (D)
122 Dwight D. Eisenhower (R)
174 John F. Kennedy (D)
126 Lyndon B. Johnson (D)
155 Richard M. Nixon (R)
121 Gerald Ford (R)
175 James E. Carter (D)
105 Ronald Reagan (R)
098 George HW Bush (R)
182 William J. Clinton (D)
091 George W. Bush (R)

The six Republican presidents of the past 50 years had an average IQ of 115.5, with President Nixon having the highest IQ, at 155. President G. W. Bush was rated the lowest of all the Republicans with an IQ of 91.

The six Democrat presidents had IQs with an average of 156, with President Clinton having the highest IQ, at 182. President Lyndon B. Johnson was rated the lowest of all the Democrats with an IQ of 126. No president other than Carter (D) has released his actual IQ, 176.

Childhood Playmate

Guest Post by blogger mf (Singapore)
Is it the time of the year or me? I seem to be recalling a lot of old forgotten incidents and people this week. This rainy Sat afternoon, it was the boy who used to go to my paternal grandmother's place.

This grandmother loved me a lot and often brought me to her place to stay for a few days every other week, for she lived alone in a big house as housekeeper for a Chinese clan association who met there.

But I didn't like it; there was nothing to play with apart from a small wind-up car - I wasn't too in love with it - and dough figurines, which I didn't have often enough. There were no cousins near my age. In fact, the whole house was empty but for me and grandmother.

I couldn't run about cos the house was huge enough for a little girl to get
lost, and it was dangerous too as the house was on a busy road. Grandmother kept three big dogs in the field behind the back quarters but they were not the friendly kind. I didn't like the parrot much cos it was squawking all the time and refused to talk like parrots did on TV. The lone cat was, well, a loner and ignored me. Grown chickens were also not much fun, and they got slaughtered too often :p

Side: I was once given two cute little chicks as pets, which Mother kept in a box in the flat. They were really noisy when grown and one day they were gone. Couple of years back, I happened to think of my chicks and asked Mother where they went to. "Your grandmother slaughtered them for chicken curry. In fact, you ate too." o_O

But sometimes, a boy would come by with his mother or grandmother, from somewhere down the road. I thought he was older than me cos he was taller. We would play quietly with dough or the car while the elders talked. We never talked. Perhaps he was shy as I was..?

When we were allowed, or when the adults weren't looking, we would play in the main hall of the house. Everything there was black; the many grandfather clocks lining both lengths of the room, the huge long table in the middle and its matching chairs. I remember sitting on the table top playing with the car. But we usually ran around the table playing catch or something. And all this time, we never talked. In my memory, we were always silent..

I didn't like the house very much, too dark, too boring, too many mosquitoes. But I liked my time there when the boy visited. Unfortunately, the visits were not too frequent and all too soon, I saw him no more =( Perhaps he had to go to school. I too had to attend kindergarten after a while and went to the house much less often.

Few photos were taken back then, and I couldn't find any of the boy in the old photo albums. But I was delighted to discover one with my puppy, which my grandmother kept and which enticed me to visit her often even after I started school:

I think the whole family visited her every week or fortnight but I don't recall the boy ever visiting while all of us were there. My grandmother is totally senile and can't remember anything now. No one else seems to know anything about the boy. Despite being my most valuable playmate in my early years, he will be a
total stranger to me today. Whoever and wherever he is, I thank him for his company, and I wish him well..

We are Bloggers: Fear Us!

More than once this past week I've heard people in the mainstream media remark that they don't like or don't trust or don't extend any credibility to BLOGGERS. This is EXACTLY what we want to hear! This demonstrates the power of free speech at work, and at it's best: even in mainland China, the BLOG has broken through barriers in a way no one would have believed possible as recently as 2000.

There are a handful of bloggers who set the scene: Hugh Hewitt and Matt Drudge (whose "Drudge Report" is really a newsblog) were pioneers of the political/newsblog... at the same time the "personal journal" or "diary-style" weblog was taking off... when the folks at Blogger/Blogspot shone the spotlight on Wendy Cheng's XiaXue, the "pop blog" with its always-controversial pop-star author was born... Over in China, Muzi Mei was paving the way for a small but daring band of female sex-bloggers, pioneering a genre that would be adopted later on by writers like Stephanie Klein and Izzy (SarongPartyGirl)... back in the USA political columnist Michelle Malkin began packaging her musings in blog form, helping to set the tone and the stage for political thinkers of every affiliation to emerge as bloggers... BLOGGING = People Power!

Bloggers are DEDICATED... I know Wendy Cheng takes her blogging very seriously and has worked very hard to keep it interesting. Her Photoshop skills are amazing. I had no idea that you could do some of the things she's done. (It's no secret that Wendy and Michelle Malkin are my two favorite bloggers, and I can't help it if they're both women and both Asian. blame God.)

Here it is CHRISTMAS EVE and MICHELLE MALKIN (keep in mind she has a family) pounds out a superb post "THE NEW YORK TIMES STRIKES AGAIN" all about the newspaper continuing to show its disregard for America's security. Attagirl, Michelle!

Some blog for money by placing a lot of ads on their blogs... others look for or are offered product endorsements, which is fine. If you can make a little money while blogging, that's great! Mainstream Media has been blogging a little... WNBC Channel 4 here in New York runs as newsblog as does MSNBC as does CBS (Public Eye). Any adverts you see on Capital Region People have been there since the early days of CRP's blogspot incarnation, which goes back to November of 2004. I haven't even bothered checking to see if any of them made any money, because I don't really care at this time. I admit I added them in because "everybody else" seemed to have them on their sites. I cut most of them loose but left a few on that I thought would genuinely interest blogders. (In case you don't know "blogders" is short for blog reades, a term attributed to Wendy Cheng.)

Now that somebody tightened their arms around the moniker "Pajamas Media," you may be wondering how to promote yourself and your blog. Maybe you want to be the next Stephanie Klein or XiaXue or Hugh Hewitt. You CAN do it...

"HOW TO BLOG LIKE A ROCK STAR"

Attention all unpaid writers with websites!

Bloggers have lost jobs, friends, and even spouses over things they revealed in their journals. Bloggers have to make the conscious decision from the start that what they write today may come back to haunt them tomorrow, and be OK with that choice. That’s the warning from one of the best veteran bloggers. They share their tips and experiences. _click_Here_!

Sarong Party Girl on Christmas

Guest Post by blogger Izzy (Sarong Party Girl) in Singapore.

There's nothing quite like Christmas in the 21st Century. No really. There just isn't anything quite like it. It's a complete mash of three different religions, and that's only in the cultures I'm familiar with. In Singapore anyway, it's firstly the mass spiritual belief in commercialism, and under that Christianity and the capitalist's take on edifices, icons such and such of Pagan mysticism.

I know, it's feels terribly sacrilegious when you think about how Christmas in this day is brought to you by Marks and Spencer's (that's what it says on their ads, and they aren't the only ones to exhibit such good Christmas spirit) but no matter, that's the way it's been done all along.

Any fool knows Christmas isn't really the date Christ was born on, and Christmas, as something celebrated about this time of the year, was celebrated all thoughout the world and through civilizations for all manner of different reasons. But in the earlier half of the Ano Domini calendar, Christianity was the equivalent of Capitalism today – we were slaves than to the inventions of Constantine, and now we're slaves to Mince Pies churned out of the arse of Marks and Spencer's. After all, the majority of us, believing that Christ has been hijacked, are having our spiritual needs (more often in modern times, regardless of geographical location) satisfied by Eastern relativism.

Although the truth is that the life of Christ has been used to usurp alternative religious views back in the day; so really, the symbolism of the life of Christ has been abused, and has been used, over a century now, to commandeer the 'Christmas' culture, among other things. A hijacked hijacker, oh how the idea of a Christian Christmas rings with irony.

But that said, there is no need for any of us to bemoan the loss of the symbolism behind Christmas to the coffers of matriarchal English business that will more than gladly bake Stollen loves by the ton and stitch synthetic pine trees to provide us all that that celebratory state of mind, regardless of the fact that no one quite knows what we're celebrating any longer. But if doesn't matter, because no one believes any longer that the gods the ancient Nordics paid tribute to actually existed. It is not what we are paying tribute to that matters, but our attitude towards the whole 'do'.

Christmas is a time for walking down the streets and feeling happy because of the lights and the garish music and the availability of rich European yuletide treats. It's all terribly commercial, but that shouldn't stop anyone from having fun. After all these years of evolution, Mankind has finally discovered what Christmas is about, and it's about the festive experience that money can buy. About gifts and treats and plane flights for the whole family to visit off-shore relatives because it is an excuse to do so, and it is about the best way to deal with your fellow man. Because at Christmas at least, people are buying and giving.

Bin Laden Babe

"I want to be accepted here, but I feel that everybody's judging me and rejecting me," says California-born Wafah Dufour, a law grad who lives in New York. "Come on, where's the American spirit? Accept me. I want to be embraced, because my values are like yours. And I'm here. I'm not hiding."

Osama Bin Laden's niece appears in a GQ photo shoot in the magazines' January edition. Wafah Dufour, who adopted her mother's maiden name after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, appears in several provocative photos in the magazine.

The pictures are likely to be considered obscene by conservative Muslims in and outside of Saudi Arabia where women are required to be veiled.

Dufour's Mom, Carmen Bin Laden, wrote the 2004 best-seller "Inside the Kingdom: My Life in Saudi Arabia," an account of her rocky marriage to Yeslama Bin Laden, Osama's half-brother, who amassed a fortune in the family's construction business and started his own investment firm. Dufour says she has no contact with her father, doesn't speak Arabic, and has an American passport.

Dufour, who was born in Santa Monica, California, while her parents studied at the University of Southern California, said she had never met Osama. But, like mother like daughter, she knows how to sell hereself (maybe she's been reading Xiaxue's blog!)

Mu Zimei Podcast

"In my blog I write what I see and how I perceive things, but with a podcast, people can hear everything for themselves. They have a much clearer picture of the experience." - Muzi Mei

Several recent visitors to Capital Region People arrived here as a result of searches entailing any or all of the following terms: Mu Zimei, Muzi Mei, Podcasts, podcasting...
Some who come looking for more about LiLi are unable to reach the Chinese websites involved, so, I am presenting below Mu Zimei's most recent podcast information, which includes the podcast link as well as a loose English translation of the Chinese text accompanying the post. Keep in mind that unless you or someone you know is either fluent in or has some familiarity with Chinese, the podcasts will be meaningless. You might try Google's Language Tools or use another translator to try to decipher the Chinese. There is another post from December in which Mu describes a sexual encounter with another female. Mu Zimei's PODCASTS can be accessed HERE. The most recent one was posted December 22nd at 5:30pm Beijing time.

Santa Worm

I've noticed lately that whenever I use AIM my computer slows down to a crawl, and today, for the first time since I wiped the harddrive clean and reloaded the OS, it froze and crashed! There's a lot to fear when using Instant Messenger software, and the latest threat is very serious. A new computer worm is targeting Instant Messenger users by trying to entice them to see a photo of Santa Claus. The Santa Claus worm is targeting American Online, Microsoft and Yahoo users. The worm, called IM.GiftCom.All, tries to dupe users into clicking a file by disguising itself as an invite from a friend. If a user clicks the link, an image of Santa Claus will appear and then the worm will attack the system.

Mariah's Sweet 17

Mariah Carey moved one step closer to the Beatles' record of 20 Number 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 Thursday as "Don't Forget About Us" reached the top of the singles chart in its 11th week.

With 17 chart-toppers, Mariah Carey now ties Elvis Presley at No. 2 on the all-time list, and becomes the only artist to post two #1 songs on the Hot 100 in 2005.

"Don't Forget About Us" is also Carey's 16th No. 1 as a songwriter, tying with Barry Gibb for third place. Only Paul McCartney with 32 and John Lennon with 26 have more.

Bonjour Capital Region People!

Guest Post by blogger Olivier Schmidt-Chevalier (France)

Love to all !

Ripped From The Albany Eye

Thou Shalt Not Steal... especially so close to Christmas, but what the heck, that's what happens when you get lazy after being out Holiday shopping and caught in traffic, etc. Anyway, The Albany Eye has a very timely post so I (out of complete laziness) just took and lifted the entire thing... shoot, it's such an excellent post, why bother to re-write it and do that "Hat Tip" thing and all that! Thanks in advance to the Albany Eye, which is the place to visit in the Capital Region for media news and info... Now, I'm not certain how popular the old Yule Log TV show was outside of New York, but for many many Christmas' past, WPIX was there, log-on-screen, crackling, for all to enjoy in lieu of a real fireplace...

Not Quite Related, but Seasonal: "Just Jew It"

Flaming Pagan Pocket Log

Is that a Yule Log in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?We've gone on and on here about the Yule Log, a favorite ancient Norse tradition that was swiped centuries ago by the Christians. Now you can download your own personal Yule Log, from the TV Log's progenitor, WPIX in New York. Play it on your computer if you wish, or burn it (ho ho!) to a CD and give as a gift. You can even carry the log anywhere on your iPod ---or best of all, load it onto that new iPod you're giving someone special. What the heck did we do before computers?

Gabrielle

I invited GABRIELLE to send a Guest-Post, and she did one better: She sent her whole blog! She recently lost her Mom, and I sure know how that feels.. My Mom passed away in her sleep on a December day several years ago... now, herrrre's Gabrielle!

Dad, BunnyDrew and Andrew

This is my favorite self-taken picture of the year, taken on July 19, 2005 at my house. The picture's quality itself isn't good, but I love them three very much - both in the picture and also in real life :)

BunnyDrew has been a very faithful sleeping mate of mine since it's given to me few days before this picture was taken. It can talk to and I listen to it everyday to remind myself that I am loved...

Looking back to those days in 2005, I couldn't help crying. It's been 2 weeks since she passed away and today I was mourning. I cried insanely when I saw her picture here. I know I shouldn't feel that way because she's in a happier and better place now. But I'm just human and I love my mother and miss her. I hope God would excuse me for those reasons .....

She never knew that it would be her last Chinese New Year and her last trip to Semarang.
She never knew that it would be the last time she took care of Dad when he's sick.
She didn't know that it was their last wedding anniversary.
She never knew that it was his last birthday.
She never thought that it was her last birthday and she would die exactly 8 months after that.
Maybe she knew that it would be the last time she stayed in the hospital, maybe not .....

Guest Post Revisited

Up until I began welcoming and featuring guest-posts last week, there was only ONE guest-post in the entire history of the Capital Region People Weblog. It originally appeared August 1st, and it is still one of the most-read, most-searched and most-relevant pieces ever posted on this blog. I think it's worth reading again, especially at this time of year.

A young girl's response to anti-Islamic sentiment

Related: Terrorism, Indifference and Intransigence
excerpt: "There is a terrific DVD available for rent called Paper Clips which poignantly describes how a rural Tennessee Middle School engages in a project to instill a sense of diversity by teaching kids about the Holocaust. They never expected to affect so much of the life of the town, gain such a deep appreciation of the lives affected and the international involvement they earned. The lesson learned was the need to fight indifference and intolerance."

Christmas Future

Guest Post by blogger Miff (Parts Unknown)

Merry Christmas!

Have you fallen down dead now that I have greeted you in such fashion? Personally, I associate religious references like the 3 kings, the baby in the manger, St. Nicholas, etc. with the date December 25. They are deeply rooted childhood memories, all very dear to me.

But understand, I have no belief system now, though I do gather and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with family and friends. He may not be my lord and saviour, but he could be yours. I respect that. Now that we have the "Holiday Tree" what is next?
It all comes down to you and what you hold to be true.

I see major upheaval, major shocking cultural changes. Were you to fall asleep today and awaken 50 years in the future, I guarantee you would not believe you're in America.

Once the cancer genome is mapped, science will move on to employ nanotechnology to map, analyze and reverse-engineer virusses (think Aids). "Ye Shall Be As Gods." Your "Holiday Tree" will be a faded, distant memory.

O Peace on Earth, will you ever come?

It IS a Wonderful Life

Guest Post by blogger Lores Rizkalla in L.A.

Whether you celebrate Hannukah, Christmas or Kwanza, we all know that this very special time of the year is both over-commercialized and exhausting. So, in the midst of the season’s hustle and bustle, I hope that we all take a moment to consider those things we value most.

One of my all-time favorite movies is It’s A Wonderful Life. Regardless of your religious beliefs, your holiday tradition, there are some worthwhile lessons we can gain, in addition to entertainment enjoyment, from this movie.

The Value of Relationships
George Bailey, Jimmy Stewart’s character, had been consumed with his vision for seeing the nations that he didn’t realize the value of the people in his life. It wasn’t until his world was rocked. Suddenly, his family and the people who were being helped meant so much more than all the money he had saved up to travel the world.

This is a great example of art imitating life. How often we get caught up in our jobs or our vision for all the things we want to do until something goes really wrong. We lose our home in a fire, a flood or a hurricane. We lose a loved one to cancer or to a divorce. Or, perhaps, like Cindy Sheehan (minus the propaganda and the politicking) we lose a father, a husband, a brother or a son in the war. Whatever the case, it is often difficult things that crystallize our priorities: people.

Let’s not wait for tragedy to clarify our perspective. We have a unique window right now to evaluate our lives.

There’s No Such Thing as Little Things
The most powerful lesson from It’s A Wonderful Life is the dramatic impact of one person’s life. George Bailey, living in the mundane, felt that his life wouldn’t have meaning until he left Bedford Falls. Little did he know that it was in the day-to-day details of his life that George Bailey had saved and transformed the lives of individual family members, friends and neighbors and even the future of all of Bedford Falls.

Bruce Barton said, “When I consider the tremendous consequence that comes from little things, I’m tempted to think that there’s no such thing as a little thing.”
Who is to say the kind of influence we are having on our families, our co-workers and the regulars we see everyday at our local Starbucks? I pray that every one of us would have an influence that is more like George Bailey than that of Mr. Potter. I pray that God would use everyone reading this now to be an agent of love, faith and hope to everyone who has the privilege of meeting you.

(note from Dave:) Lores' post REALLY got me thinking, especially after reading yesterday's guest post from Laura Aversano. There's a story in the Sunday NY Times you may want to take a look at right now:
Good Will Took a Holiday, Whatever You Call It

...and here are a few Myths & rumors surrounding the picture "It's A Wonderful Life"
A popular belief is that Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie were named after secondary characters in the film. This has been denied by the producers of Sesame Street. Although the character of Uncle Billy tied strings around his fingers to remember things just like Ernie.
Another rumor is that Pink Floyd album Wish You Were Here can be played alongside the film with key events in the movie tying in with song lyrics. The similarities are said to be more noticeable than in the other claimed Pink Floyd movie sync with The Wizard of Oz and Dark Side of the Moon.

Spiritual and Human Worthiness

Guest Post by Author & Intuitive LAURA AVERSANO in New York

Laura has been a guest on my radio program in the past. She originally wrote this piece for the Newsletter of The Academy of Religion and Psychical Research, in which it was previously published. She thought it would make a good guest post. It does. It's a good time of year to look into your heart and soul.

To see beyond the scope of the self and raise one’s awareness of the Godhead within is a feat that all humans undertake. The endurance needed to pursue what we perceive as the worthiness of being a child of God is mandatory. It becomes so not because we are indeed unworthy as children of light, but because we confuse our human worthiness with our sense of spiritual unworthiness, and that tends to bring about much pain and despair.

All of us work through our psycho-spiritual growth from the time we are in the womb. We energetically prepare and immerse ourselves in the concept that we are born into eternal life as connected to the mother. We become engrossed with the possibilities that this divine connection has no boundaries. We become nourished by the perception that we will grow in the unconditional love and presence that we feel as we are protected in this space. On a psycho-spiritual level within the womb, there is an inherent understanding of the light and the darkness but no emotional or experience-perceived understanding. As the boundaries begin to become clearer as we mature inside the womb, we begin to create perceptions based on those boundaries that, in our eyes, separate our human natures from our spiritual natures. What we perceive as the loss of innocence, the loss of ‘pure light’ into the polarity of both extremes, begins to become interpreted at some level as human and spiritual unworthiness. And thus begins our quest to find our way back home to God and to unconditional love and surrender.

At the human level, we incorporate this unworthiness into aspects of ourselves as we enter this world. The separation from the womb enables us to live a life where we learn the graces of God as we live from day to day through our experiences of giving, receiving, loving and forgiving. Through trial and error, pain and suffering, joy and happiness, we are given the strength to persevere in the way that we are called to. Not everyone follows that calling though. We learn to embrace all aspects of the psyche with the understanding, conscious or not, that we are human beings whose soul intention is to love and be loved. In our never ending search for this ‘feeling’, we tend to miss the boat and continue the search externally. The unworthiness that many of us feel without knowing it becomes embedded in the psyche only as a deterrent. This deterrent is actually the bridge to the netherworld, our greatest teacher, and the greatest influence we can possibly hope for in achieving the worthiness both human and spiritual that is inherent within each one of us. If we can give permission and acknowledge that unworthiness to be present without shame and with forgiveness, then we can begin to heal the wounds that surround us being worthy as human beings.

We cannot just do the work of being worthy as spiritual beings without embracing the human level. As we begin to embrace the possibilities of being true human beings, we will cease to confuse and separate our notion that being human and divine are different and that we can only be worthy in one realm.

In order to even begin to bring ourselves to the awareness of spiritual worthiness, we have to give ourselves permission to stand before God and be humbled. Perhaps as both human and spiritual children. This humility is not an act of doing, but an act of being. The worthiness that comes through the heavens into our beings is a heavenly gift and a kindness of mercy that we are given as children of God. It is given not because of who or what we perceive we are, nor even for the ways in which we live our lives. In truth, whether we live our lives in the darkness or in the light, we are each given the same degree of worthiness by God. It is what we choose to do with that grace that shapes our inner and outer relationships with the Divine. On the human level, because we have attached a sense of worthiness and unworthiness to who we are and how we live in the world, we are forgetting a very important thing. God is merciful in His or Her kindness. If our divine and human natures weren’t created to learn forgiveness, then we wouldn’t be made manifest in the image and likeness of the Creator.

Thus, in your lives, remember one thing: spiritual and human worthiness is not bound by God, but bound by your confusion as you make interpretations of who you think you are and who God is for you. What a heavy burden to carry. We cannot aspire to be worthy as spiritual beings without aspirations of being worthy as human beings. The two cannot be separated, nor in truth, can the feelings of despair that come up when we confuse the two, nor the feelings of joy and hope that arise when we embrace them.

TypePad Outage: "Silence of the Blogs"

In the recent past, Blogger/Blogspot users have endured a few service outages. It's always harrowing to find your blog "isn't there" when you click your URL. Imagine that great big labor of love going up in cybersmoke! SIGH!

I do recall some TypePad users laughing up their sleeves the last time Blogspot winked out. Well, they got a taste of what it's like: TypePad crashed big-time.
According to FORBES (Silence Of The Blogs)users of the system were unable to post new stories, and posts written in the last week disappeared entirely. Talk about inconvenience and FRUSTRATION!

For my TypePad blogders, NIALL KENNEDY has an exhaustive post about the outage including a 23-minute mp3 AUDIO interview with Anil Dash on TypePad service issues.
For those unable to download mp3, Mr. K also provides a transcript.

BTW - I have a full one-year back-up of this blog residing on one of my PC's... I'll tell you how I did it and how you can do it too in another post later on. One way to "back-up" is to use the mirror technique: submit your posts on two blogs, each having its own provider. I use blogger but mirror on MSN. I must admit I have been lax in doing the mirroring, but I do intend to correct that straightaway.

For you folks who reached this post via search engine, I'm welcoming Guest-Bloggers thru January and if you go to the main gateway you can begin reading and scrolling down through these various posts.

MuMu Teases, America Forgets

Chinese "Communist Blogger" MuMu was a big sensation for the obligatory 15 minutes after Howard French's NY Times Story... in case you're wondering what happened to Ms. Mu, she's getting more and more risque on her blog (at least with the photographs**: HERE and HERE)
and there appears to be some sort of "technical" effort to block her blog from being seen in North America. You can try by clicking on THIS LINK. The "Furong JieJie Fan Club" has put up some sort of lame "mirror-blog" HeRe, but it looks like they're not keeping up with updates.

Political Payola

You'll be hearing the name DOUG BANDOW a lot this weekend... Bandow, A senior scholar at the Cato Institute, admits "a lapse of judgment" taking lots of money from lobbyist Jack Abramoff -- for writing as many as 24 op-ed articles favorable to some of Abramoff's clients. (Washington Post)

Cal Thomas and Connie Schultz Weigh in on the scandal...

Morality doesn't count after you're busted!

But, some are standing by Bandow: "Doug Bandow is a good writer and a good guy."

Sex and the Suburbs

So you thought you were safe in the suburbs? Think again! This out-Geisels Beth, in my book!

A Hurricane Katrina refugee by the name of German Lambert is taken in by relatives and shakes things up at a "posh" suburban Albany school... But the REAL STORY here is why this happened at all... people afraid to speak out... political correctness... blah blah blah... I'm hearing nothing but EXCUSES... like this one:
WNYT reported Bethlehem Central School Superintendent Dr. Les Loomis saying this kind of behavior is unacceptable: "Parents, the community and students should know this is unacceptable. This kind of thing won't be tolerated in our schools." Really? Perhaps we should ask Dr. Loomis why this wasn't PREVENTED from happening. But you know how it is, folks... like the bad intersection... a kid has to get killed or maimed for life until the powers-that-be put up the traffic light.

Oops! Almost forgot "The Race Card" - Older brother Glen Lambert, 24, said he believes the allegations are racial backlash from white parents who knew their daughters were having sex with the young black man and didn't want it known in the upscale bedroom community.

"There is so much emotion," said the Lambert brothers' aunt, Ana Rochez Coyle, a few hours after her nephew was handcuffed and jailed. "He is overwhelmed with the situation."

Coyle says her nephew had permission from the 16-year-old's parents to sleep over at the house and had done so seven or eight times.
(Times Union)

HUH? PERMISSION? Wow... the parents of that girl have been definitely watching too much trash TV! Are y'all crazy out there in Suburbia?

As far as Bethlehem high school bathrooms/sex-parlors, Dr. Les Loomis says surveillance of them has been increased. Dr. Loomis, you'd better be careful! Be sure to check with local authorities before conducting your surveillance!

Of Work and Carbon Footprints

Guest Post by blogger DENNY (Missouri USA)

This is a post I've thought about many times but never written. It's about work and employment. I suppose it's about what we do with our lives and why we do it. About the impact of our lives upon the planet.

Jobs, Feet, and Bikes
A little background context for those that don't know me. From 1992 - 2004 I lived in Memphis, TN. During my time there I worked at a health food store, bike shop, university library, and a non-profit adult literacy agency. In addition I volunteered in a variety of community projects. The point is that I chose my employment based, in part, on my perception of it's social and ecological worthiness.

With two exceptions all of my jobs in Memphis were within walking or biking distance. My favorite transport was my bike or walking. Both modes are generally much less stressful than driving and far more enjoyable to the senses! Riding the bus is generally stress free and allows for a short walk to the bus stop and reading during the ride. My last job in Memphis was 3 miles away and I ended up driving this because I re-injured my knee five years ago and am no longer able to ride a bike. I walked that 3 miles a few times but that is two hours a day and I rarely did it. I tried an electric scooter for a year but it was one of the first available and often did not make the full 3 miles. Overall, in the course of the 12 years I walked or cycled an average of 60% of my travel. Not too bad but could have been better. When I did drive it was usually 6-7 miles per day.

A thought about walking: We should do much more of it than we do and I don't just mean taking walks to be taking walks though that is certainly enjoyable. We should walk as transport. Should I leave the countryside to live in a city again I will do the same as before. It's not really that difficult to find housing in a neighborhood that has an integration of food sources, social gather spaces, public library, etc. Living in the countryside this is not so easy and in truth it's not possible for me. The closest town is 11 miles away. Of course this does open up other opportunities which I'll get to in a bit.

Working less, using less
Which brings me to the present moment. I left Memphis in early 2004 and since that time I have not been employed. I've had a handful of contract jobs doing a variety of tech-related projects. I've gone from a life of activism and daily travel to one of quiet non- participation. My car sits for weeks at a time without being started. My only purchases are food. In the past five years I've purchased (new) 1 swimming suit, 6-8 pairs of socks, 1 pair of boots, 15-20 (?) pairs of boxer shorts, 2 t-shirts. I've purchased (used) 2-3 pairs of pants, 2 sweaters, 4-5 shirts. When I left Memphis all of my possessions fit into my 1992 Toyota Tercel. Actually, that's not totally true. I left many books to be used and enjoyed by my previous housemates. I also left a bed that I'd gotten off a curb and a few records. My little desk, purchased used over 15 years ago, was just a tad too big to fit in the Tercel so it was transported separately. Still, not too bad.

Over the years I've purchased several computers and several hard drives. One of those traveled around as a donation to several users. Last I'd heard it finally stopped working 2 years ago. Not too bad given I purchased it in 1997. My other computers are, as far as I'm aware still in use with the folks that purchased them from me. My current laptop is 2 years old and I expect to keep it at least one more year, possibly two more depending on future employment and the laptop's durability. I'll probably use this till it breaks rather than sell it off.

Community, Family, and Energy Resources
I don't have any children, no spouse or partner... at least not at the moment and probably not in the near future. I do have a dog... actually she has me... yes, it's true, I have a co-dependent relationship with a dog.

So now I come closer to the point. Why do we work? What's the point? Really, when you get down to it, why do we work? Of course add the responsibility of raising children and things get a bit complicated. But for those of us who have chosen not to have children why do we work? Why do we buy the things we buy? Do we consider the social and ecological costs of our purchases? Do we purchase and use only what is absolutely necessary? Is our employment contributing to the betterment of society or the ecological health of our planet? Is our employment contributing to negatives in society or ecology?

At this moment I'm living with family again. I was away for 12 years living in, and trying to create, a community of activism. As much as I enjoyed that life I'm enjoying this one too. It's very different. I think I'm still looking for that sense of community, sense of interconnection with my fellow humans but for the first time since being an adult I'm looking to my family for these things. I've come to think that the western mode of social organization took a turn for the worse many years ago. In the U.S. this seemed to happen in the 1950s and can be summed up in one word: Suburbia. What it comes down to is we've created a life-way, a culture, based upon the automobile and the nuclear family. It's not working. Not for us and not for our planet.

We have now come to it. Peak energy and climate change are upon us. What will we do collectively? What will you do personally?

We have style...

Guest Post by blogger IRIS in Singapore

I heard there are a total of 60 millions blogs (Not statistically proven) in the world.. I can't visualise the idea when people complain that they have nothing to read. In Singapore, blogging has become a different issue altogether... Singaporean bloggers think twice (or thrice) before they make the slightest attempt to abuse the platform. Should we cheer for this? I'll draw my line in this controversy... After all, there must be some sort of control somewhere.

So here I am.. (A big thanks to CRP!).. lovingly loving the people who care for me, blogging (or grumbling) my days-goes-by...

I am never good at telling stories and cant even crack a joke. The only thing that I'm good at, is to sing my 5 year old daughter some nursery songs... Eloquent, I may not be.. but I.. definitely can write (self-proclaimed). Perhaps, my writings could at times, put Singapore education to shame, but that cant really stop me from blogging.. ya' know? Glad to see new blogs coming out.. Last checked, CRP reported blogs from Saudi Arabia.. And I asked the question, "Who's next?"

I believe all bloggers have their own unique blogging style... styles that beautify the blogosphere. When we look into these different styles, different cultures were inquired.. (I see Hofstede smiling..). Through blogging, we make acquaintances, we share cultures... So keep blogging.. Dont stop! Let's raise our heads in anticipations, let's witness bloggers bringing blogging onto a brand new height..

So yeah.. Loveris says, "Blogging is fantastico!!"

(Webcomic) Mena vs Swifty. Xiaxue reigns supreme.

Guest Post by blogger SWIFTY in Malaysia

"Swifty comes from my pseudonym Eliar Swiftfire (which, in turn, is a name of a recurring character in many of my written works). I am a 21 year old Singapore-born Malaysian who dabbles in filmmaking and writing, currently studying at Murdoch University, Perth, but have just returned to Malaysia for my year-end holidays.
I started my blog last September to allow some of my readers and friends to keep track on my fanfic writing progress and filmmaking process, it was pretty private. Then I just went 'public' on July 2005 (as in pinging my blog, addressing my readers, shameless plugging, blogwhoring etc.) for the sake of creating more awareness for my creative endeavours." - Swifty

Heya folks, guestblogging for Dave. As I'm preparing for my trip to China tomorrow, I can't really write much. (also suffering from a mild bout of food poisoning, talk about good timing huh?) The recent Mena Trott vs Ben Metcalfe affair at Les Blogs has inspired me to do a webcomic instead. More of these wacky webcomics can be accessed via this index page here.

Special thanks to Ben Metcalfe and Mena Trott, who know not the existence of my humble blog.

Heh, since I'm going to China, I gotta brush up my Chinese. It's up to y'all to translate the lines in the last two panels.

Peace!

Blogger Babes Get Serious Sometimes

Time Tunnel: Back to the Summer of 2005, Xiaxue complained how Wanbao mixed up her photo with SPG's and proceeds to take it apart.

"Siao ah! My photo got mistaken as SPG's! For those who don't understand Chinese, the caption before my photo states that "19-year-old Chloe has been a popular news item recently because of her nude photos on her blog. She seems perturbed as she wrote on her latest blog entry: 'I am tired and tired of this bunch of boh liao things.'" (Note: Wanbao identified SPG as "Chloe" instead of "Izzy.")

Don't EVER sell them short... I'm talkin' about XiaXue and Sarong Party Girl. Some dis them as "meaningless" bloggers... some call them airheads... But folks, when these two gals FOCUS on serious topics, you KNOW they're not kiddin' around!

Let me digress for a sec: I get heat from some blogders who feel I should concern myself and this blog with local issues. Sometimes I do. It's really all about the Capital Region, and all the MORE about PEOPLE that people in the Capital Region are interested in. And those PEOPLE can be anywhere on the planet. What is the Capital Region? Technically, the Albany-Schenectady-Troy area is at the hub, with Saratoga to the north, Adams, Mass. to the east, Amsterdam to the west and Ravena, or maybe even Catskill to the south. What is MY Capital Region? Montreal to the north, Boston to the east, Utica to the west, New York City to the south. Me myself and I dart back and forth between Albany and NYC, these are MY cities, my homes. I've extended the blog here to include a mix of people, politics, religion and entertainment along with a smattering of news. I've tried to include meaningful links and give you the best links to other blogs out there.

Now thru early January I've invited some fellow-bloggers to be GUEST BLOGGERS. I hope that you not only enjoy their posts, but visit and bookmark their blogs!

Back to XiaXue and SPG. Wendy and Izzy from time to time have written some of the most interesting posts I've ever read. As I've metioned in the sidebar, Wendy has posted some heavy stuff in recent days... always cute, controversial and photoshop-agenic, I think Wendy has a serious career as a writer ahead of her. Izzy is no slouch either... her December 6 post on her blogspot blog "Fame and Foolishness" is bittersweet, and a great read. Matter of fact, if you read these two gals' blogs on a regular basis, they get to be like family... they talk about themselves, share photos, give you advice (even if you don't want it), make you laugh, make you cry, make you think... and do it all in real time... thanks, girls!

"What is the benchmark for success? What is the point of fame. Oh my God I know I’ve got terribly lofty ideals, but I can’t help it. Of course success should be measured by how much you change the lives of the people around you, for the better. Fame should be for the purpose of improving the existence of your fellow human beings. I can’t bear to think of the talents wasted into the pointless pursuit of things that do not matter anyway." - Izzy

"Kenny was laughing at my distress, telling me that I was taking this far too seriously. I told him that I needed to see that more people love me than hate me. This is my motivation for blogging on..." - Wendy

Turning the Tables on Today's Hip-Hop

Guest Post by DJ KuttMasta Supreme in Albany!

One art form that was becoming lost to the main stream is making a big
come back (ThankGOD).
The art I am talking about is Turntablism, with the DJ's scratching, mixing and
doing body tricks.
Back "in the day" the DJ was the main component of the Hip Hop Culture. If it wasn't for the DJ, none of this would exist. Back in the day with commerical radio (without the payola) it was fun listening to DJ Red Alert and Chuck Chillout on 98.7 Kiss fm and Mr. Magic and Marley Marl on 107.5 WBLS.
But now with all of the payola and playing the same wack record 3 times an
hour for the BDS detection spins, the level of music and skills have dropped. But
I have noticed a major change, a comeback where the skillful DJ's/Turntablists
are taking over once again and this time we are not letting the "no skill so-so
DJ's" pull a wool over on the people. In order to save this culture from becoming
a fad, we must let the skilled DJ's/Turntablists take over to put the culture
back on point where it belongs (it's all about having skills).

Thank-You, CRP!
KuttMasta Supreme
The Turntablist.

Prince on VH1: Does Anybody Care?

(Official VH1 Press Release) Prince will premiere "Te Amo Corazon," which translates to "I Love You, Sweetheart," the first audio visual installment from "3121" the forthcoming album, across all of VH1's platforms: television, broadband and wireless. This unique sonic and visual event will premiere simultaneously on VH1, VH1 Classic, VHUNO, Tempo, VH1 Soul as well as VH1.com through VH1's broadband channel Vspot and through VH1 Mobile through its partnership with Verizon's VCast service at 11:00 p.m. Tuesday December 13.
"Te Amo Corazon" represents the first ever multimedia, multiplatform, worldwide exclusive premiere of a music video.

The gorgeous and decadent location in Marrakesh, Morroco provided the backdrop for this incredibly lush ballad and video featuring Prince and Mia Maestro directed by Salma Hayek. "Salma heard the song and came up with the original concept," Prince said. "Salma is the most thoughtful, attentive director I have ever worked with. An absolute joy."

"VH1 is honored to present this unprecedented multimedia experience with a legendary innovator like Prince," commented VH1 General Manager, Tom Calderone.

VH1 connects viewers to the music, artists and pop culture that matter to them most with series, live events, exclusive online content and public affairs initiatives. VH1 is available in over 87 million households in the U.S. Vh1 also has an array of digital services including VH1 Classic, VH1 Soul, VH1 Uno and VH1 Country.

MY QUESTION: Is PRINCE still relevant?

Congress & The Cruise Ship Disappearances

Relatives of a Greenwich, CT man who vanished last July during a honeymoon cruise were on Capitol Hill today pleading for tighter federal regulations to ensure passenger safety. Family members contend George Allen Smith IV was a victim of foul play covered up by Royal Caribbean Cruises. He vanished July 5 from a Royal Caribbean ship in the Mediterranean between Greece and Turkey. The FBI is investigating, but no one has been charged and no body has been recovered.

Canadian Jill Begora, 59, was last seen by her husband on Saturday morning as the ship "Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Sea" approached the port of Nassau in the Bahamas. A search by a U.S. Coast Guard ship and the Bahamian Navy found no trace of her.

As you know, people (like Natalee Holloway) also vanish while technically on cruises but last seen alive on land. Where do all these missing people go?

Good News Day Blogger Challenge Begins

Guest Post by Blogger ELIJIO in Texas:

For one day, Jan. 2, 2006, Elijio is leading the charge to encourage bloggers everywhere to put aside their differences and opinions and blog about the good things in life. He blogs that we have enough of death and destruction on the news. If, for ONE single solitary day, we could have some GOOD news for a change, maybe we wouldn't carry around all that negative energy shown to us on the tube.

Here are the blogger challenge rules:

1. Don't be a whineass--------Stop whining or do something about it. Tell us what good you did to help or correct the problem or shut it!

2. No cheap shots--------Sarcasm has it's way of getting into any convo, don't do it on your blog.

3. No blogs on politics or the war------You have the rest of the year for that, spare us for one day!

4. Don't expose------Ya, I'd like to read about your uncle who won a trophy for tossing cow patties, but I don't wanna know that he's having an affair with the goat.

5. Promote laughter------Depression sucks! Make 'em laugh!

The blogger challenge is to promote a healthy outlook on life! We know the world sucks and we hear it on televison everyday! We have enough of the BAD news. For one day------ Let's hear some GOOD!

''Good News Day'' starts now until January 2, 2006 when it will be the #1 Top searched blog on Technorati!

You don't win anything by doing this. But, for ONE day, you will brighten up someones day who might just need to hear some GOOD news for a change.

Hasta luego.....

Amanda Congdon

The New York Times continues "blog coverage" with a hefty story by Robert Mackey about videoblogger Amanda Congdon. Amanda is the host and anchor of Rocketboom, the daily three-minute online newscast which Salon calls "one of the most popular video blogs on the Web." As the show's anchor, she does her own reports, often with a comedic slant, while also introducing segments from Rocketboom's eight correspondents in the United States and Europe.
As Rocketboom went from an initial 700 viewers in 2004 to 70,000 viewers in its first ten months, the success of Congdon and her videocasts was noted by CBS Evening News, Wired, the Associated Press and others. BusinessWeek labeled it "the most popular site of its kind on the Net."

Born and raised in Manhattan, Congdon graduated Magna Cum Laude from Northwestern University. In New York theater, she did lead roles in Waafrika (Red Room Theater) and Independence (Manhattan Theatre Source). During the second season of the NBC's reality series The Restaurant, she appeared as the coat check girl in Rocco's restaurant. Her other television credits include The Chris Rock Show (HBO) and a Showtime pilot, Cake Presents. She can also be seen in a Northstar music video, which aired on MTV2, FUSE and VH1's My Coolest Years.
She began as the anchor of Rocketboom when it debuted on October 26, 2004, and the show's unpredictable content resulted in an increase to 100,000 vlog viewers by the end of 2005. Congdon also appears in various Manhattan locations, talking to people in stores and on the street.

The New York Times on BLOGS (again!)

The NY Times seems to be fascinated (rightly so) with the blogosphere. Unfortunately, so far, the newspaper hasn't come close to publishing an article that truly informs and educates readers. One thing they always seem to "miss" is the URL of any blog they are writing about. Another is, they don't seem to have a real grasp of what's going on in the blogosphere. Ideally, they should interview at least TEN bloggers with varying points of view, if for no other reason than to underscore the fact that blogs are shepherded by unique individuals with unique points of view. Today's piece "Conservative Blogs are More Effective" By Michael Crowley seemed awfully stupid to me. And netsurfing later, I found one my favorite bloggers agrees... "...since when did the NYTimes let ignorance get in the way of its "journalism"...
When it comes to blogs and bloggers, perhaps the NYT should check out the way the media in Singapore handles the topic.

Lost Data

About 8 years ago, I found an orange colored diskette on the street. Someone had affixed a label to it, but nothing was written on that label. When I put the diskette in my "A" drive, I was treated to some of the most beautiful drawings I'd ever seen, along with some unique poetry, and a text file with driving directions from Los Angeles to San Francisco. No name, no address, no e-mail addy, no website, no phone number, NADA! I went door-to-door in what was my neighborhood at the time, but no one admitted to owning the diskette. Since there were a lot of college students in that part of the city, I figured it must have belonged to one of them, and perhaps they dropped it while moving out for the summer. You should always put your "mark" on your "stuff." Better yet, you should try and keep your things, especially computer-things, as safe and secure as possible.

What would you do if you found two floppy diskettes on the street marked 'State Secret'? Be curious enough to take the diskettes home and load them onto your computer? Assuming you did that, how would you react if to your wildest amazement your computer screen displayed never before published information that ranged from the names and addresses of undercover policemen and policewomen watching over Islamic extremists to the graphic details of the sex life of a prominent but late homosexual politician? That's the question blogged forth by Chippla Vandu on Chippla's Weblog. The entire story and related links are there.

Mena Trott Implodes

It happened in FRANCE! Mena Trott, at the Les Blogs conference (organized by SixApart) interrupted her speech about civility to single out a blogger who had criticized her, called him an ******* and dropped the F word...

"...She’d barely started when the comments started to fly across the IRC back-channel. Mercifully for Trott, these comments were not displayed for all to see as they had been for other speakers. Well, not until it got interesting...To her face, ‘dotBen’ then accused Trott of delivering a patronising speech. She asked him what he has against Six Apart. He suggested she learn to ‘roll with the punches.’ " More(theRegister.co.uk) Hey, can't we bloggers all get along? Maybe not... you'd better read ThIs_PoSt ("This is now the juicy story of the Blogosphere") from Zoli Erdos.

Snow Day

Judging by the weather forecast, we're going to get snow up and down the Hudson Valley Friday. Lots of people (and kids) will stay home, surfing the net, downloading, writing and reading blogs, playing around on MySpace or hitting the Video Games. It already snowed where DENNY lives... he's got a GREAT IDEA for something to do when the snow stops falling Friday afternoon...

The Valenti Family was moved to blog this about snow: "...Tonight is one of those gentle snowfalls that makes you feel warm and cozy as you walk amidst the marvelous snowflakes. The night is dark, the snow is white, and the pace of my walk is a leisure through a true winterwonderland. I forget what my street looks like, lost underneath this blanket of whiteness, and for a brief moment I have the opportunity to glimpse that certain blank slate that gives us all a chance to dream the undreamable..."

Ah yes, take a walk in the white... but, should be more inclined to stay inside:

It's a REVOLVING DOOR!

With a great big H/T to Capital News 9... just when you think you've seen and heard it all, along comes something to out do what's been done. Makes you wonder HOW MANY MORE?

OUT: Sandra "Beth" Geisel, who admitted to having sex with a 16-year-old student, will be released from jail next week.

IN: John Cruickshank, the 25-year-old Troy man accused of stalking a young woman from Lansingburgh is now facing rape charges after police said he had sexual relations with an underage girl.

I think the ULTIMATE FINALE here would be to sentence these two to "LIFE with one another." Imagine the things they might do...

How about ONE MORE? H/T "The Albany Eye" - Maybe you've seen those needy folks in the Times Union Holiday Fund pieces? The warm profiles of local people in need of a little help have been running recently on the front page of the paper. WNYT reported last night that the man featured yesterday, 78 year-old Sam Patalino, is on the Colonie Police Department's list of Level Two Sex Offenders. It turn out that Patalino is the same man who is identified on the police department web site as Salvatore Patalino, who was convicted in 1991 for the sexual assault of a ten year old boy in Rensselaer. Free & LEGAL mp3's

I love music! All kinds! I also like to share music with others, and download tunes when I have time. Of course, NO ONE wants to get fined or accused of illegal downloading...This came to my attention by way of Snake Oil Labs:
The first thing that anyone should do is Hit the hut. The Tofu Hut is a music listings blog that comes up with some real diamonds. It’s also the host of This big freakin’ list of music blogs, a more refined wiki-fied version can be found here.
If that doesn’t satisfy your insatiable lust for music, try Del.icio.us, where you can find loads of mp3s using a filetype search (betcha didn’t know you could do that, huh? Elbo.ws is an interesting mix of eclectic music...

and there's lot more to read... just visit SNAKE OIL LABS

Happy Holidays from Al-Qaeda

A friend and I often joke about Osama Bin Laden releasing another tape, as though OBL were a "Madonna" or a "Michael Jackson," but now comes word a "Greatest Hits" CD of OBL is out: (I kid you not!) Meantime, from DUBAI, via Reuters:

Al Qaeda's leader Osama bin Laden is still alive and leading a holy war against the West, the group's deputy leader Ayman al-Zawahri said in an Internet video on Wednesday.
"Al Qaeda for holy war is still, thanks to God, a base for jihad (holy war). Its prince Sheikh Osama bin Laden, may God protect him, is still leading its jihad," Zawahri said in a video posted on a Web site frequently used by militants.
"I bring a message of joy to all Muslims and mujahideen that al Qaeda, thanks to God, is spreading and expanding and strengthening," he said.

AL-QAEDA LAUNCHES CD OF BIN LADEN'S SPEECHES

Karachi, 6 Dec.
(AKI) - (by Syed Saleem Shahzad) - The al-Qaeda terrorist network has just launched a new CD compilation of Osama Bin Laden’s speeches from 2002 to December 2004, a copy of which has been exclusively obtained by Adnkronos International from sources in the tribal areas between Pakistan and Afghanistan. According to a senior Pakistani intelligence anlayst, the new CD, which is set to flood the markets, is "clearly aimed at connecting with the common masses all over the world."

"Previously, al-Qaeda used to spread propaganda material which would motivate people to join the Afghan resistance but this new CD does not aim for that," said a senior Pakistani intelligence analyst.

"The speeches selected for the CD are not simply propaganda material to instigate people for war but instead presented as in-depth analysis on al-Qaeda’s approach and a clarification of their various actions and their justifications,” the analyst added.

Each speech by the al-Qaeda leader addresses a specific audience; one targeting the Pakistani population (2002), another to the American public, on the eve of the US presidential elections in 2004, while others were tailored for a European or Saudi Arabian public. The CD also includes a speech, accompanied by images of war and destruction in Iraq, which is presented as a tribute to the Iraqi resistance.

Contrary to previous messages from the al-Qaeda leader, when most of the video CDs were usually based on images without any description either in Arabic or in Pashtu, the new video appears to be developed using highly professional techniques and probably in a well-equipped studio. It is believed that the studio may be in the tribal areas of North Waziristan, which lies on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The video offers high audio-visual quality and there are even English slides to accompany the speeches which are addressed to the non-Arabic nations. At the same time, a separate PDF-formatted file has been placed along with the video in the CD, with transcripts of the speeches available in various languages including Urdu, Persian, English and Arabic.

"This latest package showed clearly one thing - that al-Qaeda has strongly re-grouped and in an organized manner has spread its propaganda material to the whole of the Muslim world," commented a senior Pakistani security official.

The longest speech in the compilation is bin Laden’s December 2004 address to the people of Saudi Arabia - the last the world has heard from him. Outlining the differences between the people and the rulers of Saudi Arabia and the reasons behind these divergences, he presents an in-depth historical and political analysis. The speech in December 2004 came ten days after the 6 December attack by militants in Saudi Arabia on the US consulate in Jeddah.

In another of the speeches, bin Laden addressed the American people on October 29, 2004, just before the US presidential elections on 2 November. Two other speeches from last year are also included, one addressed to the Iraqis, another offering a 'truce' to Europe.

In 2003, he gave another message to the Iraqis, and yet another one where he addressed to American public after the US invasion in Iraq in March 2003.

Recycling Muzi Mei

"Sex, Please--We're Young and Chinese" is the title of an article that has already appeared in TIME magazine's Online Edition. I knew SOMETHING was up as soon as this blog began registering hit after hit originating from search engine queries for Mu Zimei and/or Mu Zimei Podcast. [Mu Zimei PODCAST & other AUDIO HERE]

"Li Li has lost exact count of how many men she has bedded, but she knows the number is far above 100. "I don't keep statistics," says the former journalist, 27. But she isn't averse to kissing and telling. For the past couple of years, Li has kept a blog--written under the pen name Muzi Mei--that has chronicled everything from her penchant for orgies and Internet dating to her skepticism toward marriage when it means staying faithful to one man. This fall the Beijing resident posted a recording of her own lovemaking sounds that would make Paris Hilton blush. More than 50,000 people simultaneously tried to download the 25-minute podcast, crashing the host server. Despite government attempts to censor it, the sex diary is so popular that Li's pen name is intermittently the most searched keyword on China's top search engine. "I express my freedom through sex," says Li, unapologetically. "It's my life, and I can do what I want." (more from TIME)

So, first the NY Times stirs the pot with "MU MU" and now TIME magazine resurrects "Mu Zimei" and triggers new interest in LiLi. So, for at least the next 7 days and then some, there will be a lot of search activity for Mu and LiLi and Podcast! Strange, because more than two years have passed since Mu Zimei (Muzi Mei, according to TIME) was a "hot item," and two years (as you know) is an ETERNITY in cyber-time! Now, here's what I've already blogged:

PetVet Dr. Larry Family

This weekend on the Capital Region People radio program my guest is Dr. Larry Family from Aqueduct Animal Hospital in Niskayuna. This is Dr. Family's third annual appearance talking about Pets and the holidays, and this year he also advises pet lovers about Avian flu, Kennel Cough and Canine Flu ("Dog Flu"). We also talk about the arrival in the Capital Region of the animal anesthetic Ketamine as an illegal "party" drug (used by people).

Dr. Family was recently interviewed in the NY Times after reporter Dinitia Smith heard him mention DogCat Radio on his PetVet Radio Program (more on PetVet below)... the NYT quotes Dr, Family recommending DogCatRadio to his patients' owners. "It's of interest to those people whose pets have certain phobias or anxiety issues," he said in a telephone interview from the outskirts of Schenectady, N.Y., where he has his practice.

"I have recommended it to those whose dogs are having certain problems behavior-wise in the home environment," he said.

"It might be helpful with dogs with separation anxiety issues," Family went on. "Dogs, especially, are interested in watching TV with their owners and listening to music."

I get a kick out of the way the newspaper mentions that Dr. Family is in the "outskirts." I picture him holed up in an old doghouse somewhere... but I digress...

Here's more on DogCatRadio, culled from various sources, including NPR.

Public radio is for people -- but not DogCatRadio.com. The Internet radio station's founder, 34-year old Adrian Martinez of Los Angeles, says the station is aimed at the pet community -- both pets and their owners. DogCatRadio.com broadcasts a mix of upbeat pop music Martinez thinks pets and people can listen to together. (NPR Audio interview with Martinez)

Since many pets are apparently bilingual, DogCatRadio also has a "Spanish Hour," 7-8 p.m. daily, with Hispanic commentary and music, like Luis Miguel's No Se Tu.

Martinez owns six dogs and two cats... he says he founded the station because "my cat, Snickers, asked me to do it." K. You can read the original article about Martinez, which includes Dr. Family's comments at this link

News Article mentioning Dr. Family:
Pets are routinely being given chill pills

Dr. Family is host of PETVET, heard Sunday mornings 10-11am over am590 WROW. No matter where you are around the world you can always listen to AM 590 WROW from your computer. At home or at work, WROW will keep you updated with the latest Capital Region news and more. Listen to WROW (Requires Windows Media Player).

By way of the slumbering Smalbany blog, which awoke long enough to post this: "I think that this new blog about Albany has a chance to generate some good posts. It's heart is in the right place..." Comes word that a hardcore Albany blog has arrived on the scene, penned by "Erin" and you can See It HeRe!

Erin has a really interesting little entry about Albany's old Wellington Hotel, and she has plenty to blog about Albany's nightspots. And while on the subject of Albany blogs, the Albany Eye is the blog to visit for media news, critiques and criticisms. The Eye is updated on a daily basis, usually very early in the morning.

Everyday I routinely check Technorati to see what topics people are searching for and/or talking about. In the top 10 all day and #1 at this moment is "Bruna Bianco," which, when you click on it, returns a single entry... I searched for "Bruna Bianco" on Google and came up with nothing. So, the mystery: Is there a person or event called Bruna Bianco or is Bruna Bianco up to #1 because people are clicking on it because they are curious... or is somebody playing around? you tell me!

A Girl Named Lee

The New York Post says she was the "Paris Hilton of South Korea." 26-year old Lee Yoon-hyung arrived in New York in September. She was found dead in her Astor Place apartment November 19th. She hung herself. She was the daughter of Samsung chairman/CEO Lee Kunhee, heir to an 86-Billion dollar global electronics empire. Her stock shares were worth 191-Million dollars. The heiress once enjoyed popularity in South Korea when she started a blog called "Pretty Yoon-hyung" that described what is was like to be a daughter in a family that ran the country's top conglomerate. She was attending New York University, and was described as a passionate and dedicated student.

Samsung originally concealed her suicide by saying she died in a car crash in upstate New York. The post says she was depressed after her parents forbade her to marry a young man named Soobin Shin. How very sad. Her money couldn't save her from her broken heart. To die like this is much worse than a car crash or an aviation accident. Here is a soul, so tortured, it can no longer bear to stay alive. Or - was it MADE to LOOK like a suicide? Will we ever know?

To Blog or Not to Blog

There's nothing worse, IMHO, than blogging that you have "nothing to blog." It's called WRITER'S BLOCK, and it happens to everyone, in varying degrees. IF nothing is happening in your life for a day or two, just chill! You'll have something to blog about LATER. But whatever you do, DON'T BE LIKE AMBRA! One of the blogospheres best, Ambra Nykola may be "burnt out." We all need a mini-vacation from blogging once in awhile... even Michelle Malkin needs to cool her keyboard now and then!

"Ingredients of a Popular Blog" is a kick-ass post from blinkymummy, in which the 29-year-old lists what SHE thinks makes readers sit up and take note of blogs.

Then there's TECHNORATI, which has driven some bloggers, like Daphne Teo, to commit blogicide and either shut their blogs down entirely, or, as in the case of Arissa Luna, use "password protection" as a way of allowing only registered and approved readers access to their weBlogs. Others, like Dawn Yang, have endured some "tough love" from other bloggers!

When the blogging gets tough, the tough get blogging! Everybody else just falls down and drops out!

Saratoga Monterey India

THIS is the "underdog" kind of story people love... THE SARATOGA SPRINGS BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM in an upset victory over the 19 best running teams in the United States, winning the NIKE Team Nationals Cross-Country meet Saturday in Portland, Oregon... the Saratoga GIRLS Cross-Country team placed 2nd!

One of the things I've been doing this weekend is moving some songs from DVD to cassette. When I went to the Albany Public Library on Friday, I found the Monterey Pop DVD along with the Outtakes DVD. They're copy-protected but one can still copy the soundtrack to tape. The movie DVD has 5 different audio settings, making it the easiest to copy DVD soundwise: most DVD's have lower audio levels which means an audiptaped copy needs to be cranked up when listening in the car. Not so with Monterey Pop. Matter of fact the sound quality of the Jefferson Airplane's performances exceeds that on the Airplane's video DVD, which I thought was pretty good!

The first and perhaps the best of the Rock Music performance documentaries, Monterey Pop is another one of those miraculous D.A. Pennebaker movies where he magically happens to be in the right place just as history is made. The Monterey International Pop Festival was three nights that marked a real change in pop, away from solo performers and folk oriented music, to album based rock groups. The film is put together in Pennebaker's original cinema verité style - no narration, no tricks, just what his cameras are able to capture. It's perhaps the first and last time that rock groups were recorded on film for what they were, instead of being hyped by image-building manipulators. (credit: Glenn Erickson) Over 200 000 people attended the festival, and it is generally regarded (along with the release of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which was released two weeks earlier) as the beginning of the Summer of Love. Funds raised by the festival and subsequent film and CD sales were earmarked to The Monterey Pop Foundation which is still in existence today and providing help to worthwhile causes such as the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic.

Speaking of the Fab Four, a fellow who met the Beatles in India way back when has released photographs and anecdotes in a book entitled "The Beatles In India." (Duh!)

Border Security

North Country authorities continue searching for a man who entered the USA illegally through TEXAS. (Prior to his Presidency, George W. Bush served for 6 years as the 46th Governor of the State of Texas)... The PostStar has details (excerpt follows)

Reyer Aruero, if that's his real name, knew he was in trouble.

Within hours after police said he caused an Aug. 25 car-motorcycle crash that killed a Kingsbury man, the illegal Mexican immigrant was long gone.

That has left Washington County authorities scrambling trying to find ways to locate him so he can face multiple criminal charges in the collision that claimed the life of 51-year-old Daniel "Digger" Irwin.

Washington County sheriff's officers said Aruero was to blame for the crash on Route 4 that occurred when he turned a Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle into the path of Irwin's Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

After the crash, Aruero presented officers with a driver's license in the name of David Zavala, but sheriff's officers suspected it was not his real name, Undersheriff Matthew Mabb said.

Sheriff's officers quickly suspected he was an illegal alien, but without confirmation from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, and without a commitment from that agency to pick him up to face federal immigration charges, local police released him the night of the crash.

Mabb said the Sheriff's Department tried to work with INS that night to determine exactly who he was. But the federal agency had one officer on duty in its Rouses Point station, and was unable to free up someone to help at that point, Mabb said.

Life and Death

At one time or another, you've no doubt been told things like "life is short" and "be all that you can be" and you've read and heard the words of others who wish they could have been more and done more... others see potential for younger ones who have plenty of time to choose a "right path" and try to guide them in that direction.

You live your own one life and find your own way. You have to be true to YOU and find your own peace within your heart and soul. When I see people ignoring opportunities or busying themselves with worship of movie stars or rock stars, I feel sad for them. For some, that's the only way they can live their lives without feeling terribly small and insignificant.

Every life is precious. Enjoy YOURS, have fun, be kind to others and yes, like the US ARMY suggests, "be all that you can be."

"...I reminded him that I am his child and since the day I was born, God has given me to him and Mom to take care of. So I begged him to at least be with me until someday I get married. He cried and promised me that he’d be there on my wedding..."

For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

Pastor Smoking Der Grasser?

From today's "Weird But True" in the NY Post:

"A German Protestant youth group has figures out a way to combine the HOLY BIBLE with GIRLS GONE WILD - a RELIGIOUS CALENDAR that features a dozen nude photos of youthful actors portraying figures from the Good Book...

...this is sure to outrage German Christian leaders, right? Wrong.

'It's just wonderful when teenagers commit themselves with their HAIR AND SKIN to the Bible,' said Bernard Grasser, pastor of a church in Nuremberg."

Perhaps someone should examine Grasser's credentials. Perhaps he needs a psychiatric evaluation. Perhaps he has been smoking der grasser, Yah?

Whatever Happened to Sister Furong?

Now that the NY Times has "discovered" SEXY card-carrying communist blogger MuMu, we just gotta wonder whatever happened to that goofy nutty Sister Furong JieJie. If you read Chinese, you must have read far too much about her already. She's now just a distant digital memory...

Over the summer, Shi Hengxia was all the rage: then, without warning, this:

"...Only a few days ago, Sister Lotus was planning a lucrative media career on the back of her internet postings, often illustrated with saucy pictures in over-the-top poses. Now the authorities have decided that the show has gone on long enough. The Sister Lotus phenomenon is history.

"Just like that, it was all over," she says, unusually deflated. "They blocked me. The Propaganda Department told the television stations and big newspapers to stop covering me. For some reason, they were uncomfortable." "
(The Peking Duck)

So the gal who "gave men nosebleeds" is gone...

Voiceral

Imagine plugging in your home phone in China or Singapore and being able to receive calls from people back in New York who are dialing your LOCAL phone number! (No long distance charge!)

NOW you can take your phone number with you wherever you go all around the world! Roam if you want to, with NO ROAMING FEES, and unlike a cell phone, this system works everywhere!
David Conboy and his partner Adam Wills of Voiceral are my guests on this weekend's Capital Region People radio program.

Siena College grad David Conboy began Global One (later known as Global 2000) in 1994. Sold Global to Biznessonline in 1999, introduced the principals of Biznessonline to the owners of 6 other ISP's, purchased those ISP's and went public in May of 1999. Conboy sat on the Board of Directors of BiznessOnline. The company traded on the NASDAQ under the symbol BIZZ. He left BiznessOnline in June of 2001 and started Voiceral Communications in April of 2005 after following the progress of the VoIP industry for the preceding 3 years. Adma Wills stepped on board to (borrowing a phrase from somewhere else) "build the system from the ground up."

Here is a good site that compares most, if not all, of Voiceral's competitors. But David Conboy notes that, at a quick glance, you will see others with lower prices. However, those prices are NOT for the same service. For example, Cox Communications has a plan for $9.99, but they charge 5¢ per minute for local calls. On average, consumers spend about 500 minutes per month on the phone. So, if 250 of those minutes are for local calls (that's less than 10 minutes per day), their total bill would be $9.99 + $12.50 = $22.49.

Voiceral Communications, Inc., has unveiled a $14.99 digital telephone service (also known as Voice Over Internet Protocol or "VoIP") that provides nationwide subscribers with unlimited North American calling and free calls to Canada, with all the same service features of their old home phone for just $14.99/month ($16.94/month after all regulatory fees and government taxes are included).

"We're offering the lowest rate in the nation with no hidden fees or service charges," says Conboy. "The secret to being able to offer such competitive rates is that we're leveraging efficiencies in technologies that other companies have yet to realize."

The system is also simple to install. With a DSL or cable Internet connection, new subscribers register for service online at voiceral.com or over the phone at (518) 618-0000. Unlike their competitors, which typically require a 12-month contract, Voiceral requires NO contract.

Busy Capital Region Courtooms Today

Darius Ashley was back in Albany County Court today, once again pleading guilty to an April rape of a 14 year-old girl in Albany, the rape of a 23 year-old woman in July and the attempted abduction of Hackett Middle School student (and murder victim Gretchen Perham's classmate) Stephanie Quackenbush in June. The D-A's office says Ashley will be sentenced on the 9th unless he makes a new motion again to withdraw his plea. The sentencing rescheduled from today to next Friday because Quackenbush's attorney John Aretakis is out of town. Quackenbush wants to give a victim impact statement.

Sandra "Beth" Geisel was also back in court today, where Judge Stephen Herrick determined she will register as a Level I sex offender -- the lowest level.

Hilary Regan was sentenced today in Rensselaer County Court to five years probation and 100 hours of community service for the death of her friend, Alyssa Bouchey. Police say the 16-year old Regan was driving without a license on her way to Columbia High School last winter when she lost control of the car and hit a tree. Bouchey, a backseat passenger, died in the accident.
